40 Weeks & 2 Days – Doctor Appointment

23 June 2008 2 Comments

Today was yet another appointment with the doctor and the news was a little depressing. Because my doctor was out of town the appointment last week was with the nurse practitioner. She had told me I was already 2 centimeters dilated and could go into labor at any time. This week my doctor discovered that isn’t the case. I am far from dilated.

Typically she prefers to induce no later than 1 week after the due date. So we are scheduled to arrive at the hospital for induction on June 29th at 8pm and would be expected to deliver Monday June 30th. They would start with Cytotec which is a drug that will help ripen the cervix then 12 hours later they would give me Pitocin which would start the contractions if they haven’t already begun. Throughout the process I’d have continuous fetal monitoring along with various drugs like phenergan, terbutalone, sublimaze and other things I can’t pronounce. These cover things like nasuea and pain caused by the first two drugs.

Although it is scheduled I’m not very keen on the idea. As much as I am looking forward to having my body all to myself again I’d like as little medical intervention as possible. I feel like there is a domino effect with inducing labor which leads straight to a cesarean. When getting induced you are actually 3 times more likely to have an cesarean than when you go into labor naturally.

Throughout this week I am going to try everything possible to go into labor naturally. If I still feel uncomfortable about having the induction take place on Sunday I will post pone at least a few more days. After all I am not 42 weeks until July 6th. God has been doing this way before Pitocin so I am hoping and praying that is how this baby is born.
