Homemade, Natural Toothpaste Recipes

natural_toothpasteTo follow up to the article on homemade, natural deodorant, we will be talking about homemade, natural toothpaste recipes. Below are several recipes that can replace your current toothpaste. There are many reasons why it is important to avoid the use of popular store bought tooth pastes. I won’t go into detail on that topic in this post. You can read this article for a detailed (and slightly scary) summary of toothpaste.

The ingredients in a natural toothpaste recipe are personal choice depending on the strength and flavors you prefer. At the base of most recipes is baking soda.  To this, you can add a variety of extracts (like lemon or peppermint), hydrogen peroxide, or water.

Sample Recipes for Homemade Toothpaste

Easier Than Pie Toothpaste Recipe:

  • Wet toothbrush with water and dip into baking soda.

Premix Natural Toothpaste

  • Baking Soda – 6 teaspoons
  • Purified Water – a few drops

Super Clean Natural Toothpaste

  • Baking Soda – 6 teaspoons
  • Hydrogen peroxide – a few drops

Homemade Peppermint Toothpaste Recipe

  • Baking soda – 6 teaspoons
  • 15 drops peppermint or wintergreen extract

Coconut Delight Toothpaste Recipe

  • 2 Tablespoons of coconut oil
  • 2 to 3 Tablespoons of baking soda
  • A few drops of pure peppermint extract

Note: Coconut Oil has a melting point around 75-76 degrees. If you live in a climate above that your toothpaste may have a liquid feeling. This will not decrease effectiveness.

Old Fashioned Tooth Powder

  • 2 Tbsp dried lemon or orange rind
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 2 Tsp salt

Place rinds in food processor, grind until peel becomes a fine powder. Add baking soda and salt then process a few seconds more until you have a fine powder. Store in an airtight tin or jar. Dip moistened toothbrush into mixture, brush as usual. This recipe is not intended for everyday use. It is recommend for us twice per week.

Homemade Mouthwash recipes

  • Brew mint tea. Allow to cool. Rinse mouth with it!
  • Diluted versions of the toothpaste recipes above.

Storing Homemade Toothpaste

There are a few options for storing your homemade, natural toothpaste.

  • If you’d like to feel “normal” you can clean out an old toothpaste container and use a cake decorators bag to squeeze the toothpaste mixture into the container.
  • Place the mixture in a small container with a screw on/off lid. Recycle old lotion or makeup containers for this.

Some recipes I’ve run across call for perishable ingredients (like strawberries). If using a recipe like this it is best to make a small amount and refrigerate it.
