Baby Lists by Elaine Farber: Book Review
I was asked to review a new book, called Baby Lists. The book was written by Elaine Farber, a newborn consultant who has three children of her own. (First of all, how do you become a newborn consultant, and where do I sign up?)
Stan and I had a 3 ring binder with all of our baby lists in it: what to buy, birth plan, baby shower guests, etc. Most of which we had gathered from parenting and pregnancy books. On the other hand, this book lays it all out for new parents, from what to think about in a birth plan to types of strollers. It is organized into different sections, bath, nursery, gear, etc. Very helpful.
My only issue is a few oddly placed items within the lists. For example, the book lists baby wipe warmer as a “nursery necessity” versus a “nursery nice-to-have” item. Instead of debating semantics and personal preference, I will say this – the important thing to remember is to take baby lists with a grain of salt. You do not have to buy every baby product available to mankind in order to be a great parent. However, since the days of children raised by the entire tribe are over, it doesn’t hurt to have much needed guidance by way of a great book of lists. All in all, this book makes a great gift for first time parents. Especially, moms like me who, literally, have no idea what they are getting into. I am surprised someone didn’t write it earlier.
The only list this book lacks is the one titled, “If you are broke and only need to bare essentials for Baby List”. This is a baby list I wish I had. On it would be:
1. Baby Pack (Baby Bjorn or similar)
2. Diapers
3. Wipes
4. Sleepers
5. Pacifiers
6. Naps, glorious naps
I am not sorry that I just demystified a confusing world full of bottle sanitizers and baby wipe warmers, because this list is reality. Bare Essentials people, bare essentials.
